Connecting at Vienna airport

Connection time calculator, immigration and security, and how to move between terminals at VIE.

How connections work at VIE

At Vienna airport, passengers connecting between two international flights can usually stay in the transit area without going through immigration.

The airport has 4 terminals or concourses (Gates B and C (Schengen), Gates F (Schengen, Terminal 3), Gates D (non-Schengen), Gates G (non-Schengen, Terminal 3)). All of them are connected after security, so you do not need to clear security again to change.

Terminals / concourses: Gates B and C (Schengen), Gates F (Schengen, Terminal 3), Gates D (non-Schengen), Gates G (non-Schengen, Terminal 3)

Getting between them: Walking with moving walkways: most airside walks take under 20 minutes

Schengen gates are B and C (west side) and F (Terminal 3); non-Schengen gates are D and G. Austrian and Star Alliance flights mostly use Terminal 3, so long-haul connections usually route through F and G. Gate areas are linked airside by moving walkways.

Border control applies between the Schengen (B, C, F) and non-Schengen (D, G) zones.

  • Official minimum connection time is 25 minutes when both flights use the same zone and the inbound is on time.
  • Moving between Schengen and non-Schengen means border control: 5 minutes off-peak to 40 minutes when several long-haul flights arrive together.
  • Construction for the southern terminal expansion (due 2027) may cause detours.

Estimate based on typical times at this airport, not your airline's official minimum connection time. Immigration and security lines change with the time of day and season. On a single ticket, the airline must rebook you if you miss the connection; on separate tickets, it does not.
