What to sort out with your airline
Before or after your trip, these issues are handled directly with the airline, ideally well in advance:
- Check-in and documents: many countries require your passport to be valid for 3 to 6 months beyond your stay. Confirm it with the airline and the embassy of your destination before checking in online.
- Baggage: size and weight limits, prohibited items and fees for checked or excess baggage. Each fare has its own rules: read the fine print.
- Minors traveling alone or with one parent: some countries ask for a signed, sometimes notarized, consent. Ask about the airline's Unaccompanied Minor service, its age limits and deadlines.
- Reduced mobility and pregnancy: request assistance at least 48 hours in advance. Many airlines ask for a medical certificate from around week 28 of pregnancy.
- Pets and assistance dogs: spaces for pets in the cabin are limited, so book early. Assistance dogs usually travel free, with notice at least 48 hours ahead and the required documents.
- Changes and cancellations: check whether your fare allows a refund or only a voucher. If the airline changes your flight, ask about assistance (hotel, meals) and missed connections.
- Delays, cancellations and denied boarding: on flights covered by EU Regulation 261/2004, arriving 3 hours or more late or a last-minute cancellation may entitle you to €250 to €600 in compensation, unless there were extraordinary circumstances. Keep your boarding pass, receipts and messages.
