General Requirements for Car Hire
To complete a car hire agreement at Lille Airport, the main driver and any additional drivers must present the documentation required by the rental company. These are the basic and common requirements in France:
- Identity and Travel Document: A valid passport or national identity card.
- Driving Licence: A full (not provisional) driving licence from the country of origin is required, with a minimum validity period that varies between 1 and 3 years, depending on the vehicle category and the company.
- International Driving Permit: For citizens of countries outside the European Union, it is recommended to carry an International Driving Permit (IDP) along with the national licence.
- Credit Card: An international credit card in the main driver’s name, required for the security deposit hold. Debit cards are generally not accepted for this purpose.
Age and Supplements
- Minimum Age: The minimum age to rent may be 18 years, but many vehicle categories and most companies require drivers to be at least 21 or 23 years old.
- Young Driver Surcharge: Drivers under 25 years old are usually subject to an additional daily charge (young driver supplement).

5 tips for renting a car abroad
- Make sure your driver's license is valid in the destination country. Some countries also require an International Driving Permit (IDP). Keep in mind that the IDP is not valid on its own: it must always be carried together with your national driver's license.
- Check the documents and insurance required by local traffic laws, and what coverage is included in your rental (collision damage waiver, third-party liability, deductible).
- Learn the traffic rules of the destination country: speed limits on highways and city streets, right of way at intersections without traffic lights, blood alcohol limits, tolls, etc.
- Check which side of the road traffic drives on, and whether the steering wheel is on the same side as in your home country.
- Know what to do if you are involved in a traffic accident: who to call, what to document and how to report it to the rental company.
