Layover guide. Sleeping facilities in the public zone or boarding area
Spending the night at the airport
New York JFK airport operates with many flights and connections not only inside the United States, but also in the rest of the world. Therefore, movement is constant, even during the night and early in the morning. That is why it is common to see many passengers walking through the enclosure and waiting for their flight departure. Although all terminals remain open 24 hours a day, the airport does not have many comfortable places where you can rest, and it is also pretty cold, noisy and bright. It is recommended to have a sleeping bag, blankets, an eyemask and earplugs.
Where to rest: As previously mentioned, there are not many resting spots in the public areas and most seats have armrests, which makes it difficult to rest. Terminals 1 and 4 may be the most comfortable, since at least there are eateries open throughout the night. Terminal 5 is the most modern and clean and can also be an option if you do not care about sleeping on the floor. Another option (by paying or through a credit card offering the service) is to use one of the VIP lounges, where you can access more amenities and privacy. The only problem is that most of them close at night. The Wingtips Lounge, in the boarding area of Terminal 4, is the only one that stays open 24 hours a day. If the passenger finally decides to go to a hotel, there are several in the vicinity, and some of them operate shuttle services. At the end of this article there are a few accommodation alternatives.
Baggage: Luggage storage offices operate from 7:00 am to 11:00 pm. This means you will have to keep your bags with you until you can make the check-in.
Eating and drinking: There are two terminals that have options open 24 hours a day: Terminal 1 (boarding area) and 4 (public area).
Restrooms: Showers available only inside some of the VIP lounges, but not in the public toilets.
Wi-Fi: Free and unlimited.
Other services available around the clock: ATMs, baby changing facilities.
In the Arrivals Halls there are either counters or courtesy telephones to make reservations with one of the numerous hotels in the vicinity. Most of these provide complimentary transportation to and from the airport.
