Amsterdam Schiphol airport (AMS)

Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, opened on September 16, 1916, is the main air terminal in the Netherlands. It is also one of the busiest European airports regarding passenger and cargo movement. It operates with international flights around the globe.

The airport is situated 9 km (5.5 miles) southwest from Amsterdam and is located next to highway A4, which connects the city with The Hague and Rotterdam.

Bus - The enclosure has an extensive network of direct buses to locations in the surroundings. Stops are found at Schiphol Plaza, directly in front of the Arrivals and Departures Halls. Line 397 (Amsterdam Airport Express) departs every 10 minutes to the city centre, going through Elzenhof, Koekoekslaan, Anderlechtlaan, Olympisch Station, Haarlemmermeestation, Museumplein, Rijksmuseum and Leidseplein. The fare is €5.00 and the trip takes about 45 min. More information: Tel +31 900 266 6399. In addition, the Schiphol Hotel Shuttle (Tel +31 883 394 741) connects the enclosure with different hotels in Amsterdam, with a fare of €17.00.

Train - The station is found below the airport, and trains from NS (Tel +31 307 515 155) leave from there. The intercity service connects the enclosure with Amsterdam Centraal (15 minutes journey; €4.30), Rotterdam (25 min.; €12.40) and Breda (55 min.; €19.30). Other services run to Hilversum, Hoorn, Leiden, Lelystad, Venlo, Hoofddorp, Almere, Den Haag, Nijmegen, Groningen, Amersfoort, Leeuwarden, Enschede. There are also high-speed trains to different locations in Germany (Bonn, Dortmund, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Hannover, München, Osnabrück) and Belgium (Antwerpen, Mechelen, Brussel, Leuven, Gent). Tickets available from vending machines and counters at the Schiphol Plaza.

Taxi - Metered, private or shared, cabs available around the clock in front of Schiphol Plaza. There are also business taxis with better comfort. Next to Arrivals Hall 4 there is a reservation counter (Tel +31 206 013 400). Travel time to downtown Amsterdam is around 15 minutes.

The airport has a bank (7:00 am to 10:00 pm), ATMs, currency exchange bureaus (6:00 am to 10:00 pm), mailboxes, VIP lounges, mobile phone services, work and charging stations, internet kiosks and Wi-Fi access free of charge for 4 hours (in addition to a prepaid premium service). Meeting and conference facilities available before and after the security checkpoint.

Food and Drinks- Inside the terminal there are numerous options, including restaurants, bars, fast food outlets, coffee shops, bakeries, pizza places, icecream stores. Both before and after the security control there are places open 24 hours a day.
Shopping- Duty-free shops and supermarket at the Schiphol Plaza. There are also retailers selling jewellery, clothing and accessories, liquor, sweets, perfumes, cosmetics, electronics, souvenirs, flowers, books, newspapers and magazines, footwear, toys.
Baggage- Trolleys available for free in the Departures Hall, the car parks, Schiphol Plaza and the baggage reclaim areas. Porter service by previous reservation. Lockers in the Departures Hall and luggage depot 24 hours a day between Arrivals areas 1 and 2 (Tel +31 207 952 843). Luggage wrapping in Departures Halls 2 and 3, from 4:15 am to 8:00 pm and from 5:00 am to 10:00 pm, respectively. Lost and found service at the information booths (Tel +31 207 940 800).

Inside the enclosure there are several parking lots for short and long stays, with charging stations for electric vehicles and valet parking service (Tel +31 204 067 890). Rates

P1 - Covered area directly opposite the terminal, for stays of up to 48 hours.
P3 - Multi-storey facility for long-term parking, connected to the main building every 10 min. through courtesy shuttles.
P6 Valet Parking - Across from the Arrivals Hall, for stays of more than 3 days.
Terminal Valet Parking - Between Departures areas 2 and 3.


Facilities include reserved parking spaces, accessible counters, lifts, escalators, moving walkways, wheelchairs, adapted restrooms, automatic doors, electric caddies for passenger transport and ambulifts to board the plane.
