San José airport (SJO)

Juan Santamaría International Airport, opened on May 2, 1958, is the main air terminal in Costa Rica. It operates with domestic and international flights throughout America and Europe.

Annual passenger traffic: 5.1 million passengers went through it in 2017.
Tel: +506 2437 2400. There are general and tourist information counters in the central lobby, next to gate 8 and across from the immigration area.

The airport is located 23 km (14 miles) to the northwest of the city of San José.

The airport has a bank (5:00 am to 8:00 pm), ATMs, currency exchange bureaus (24 hours a day), VIP rooms, mobile phone services, public telephones and Wi-Fi access free of charge for 3 hours.

Food and Drinks- There are restaurants, fast food outlets, cafés and bars close to the gates and in the food court. Brioche Dorée, Café Lavazza and Bar Imperial are open 24 hours a day.
Shopping- Duty-free shops in baggage reclaim halls 2 and 5 and next to gates 4, 5, 8 and 15. There are also stores selling fashion, accessories, souvenirs, books, magazines, handicrafts, toys, electronics, jewellery.
Baggage- Enquiries about lost property should be directed to the Operations and Security Office, Mondays through Fridays between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm (Tel +506 2437 2610).

Bus - At the terminal you can board public bus services from TUASA (Tel +506 2442 6900) with a frequency of 5 minutes, from 4:00 am to 11:00 pm. They travel to Alajuela (15 min.), Heredia (40 min.) and San José (35 min.). In addition, most buses traveling from the beaches at Guanacaste and Puntarenas stop at the airport.
On the other hand, Gray Line Airport Express (Tel +506 2220 2126 / 2291 2222) and Interbus (Tel +506 4100 0888) provide private or shared transportation to any destination inside the country and have offices in the baggage reclaim hall. They operate from 6:00 am to 11:00 pm.

Taxi - Taxi Unidos (Tel +506 2221 6865 / 2222 6865), Coopetranstura (Tel +506 2440 4444 / 3113), Gorila Taxi Aeropuerto (Tel +506 8888 0745) and Taxi Cab (Tel +506 2524 5456) are the airport's official operators. Cabs are orange-coloured and are available around the clock. The service can be hired inside the terminal, after customs. The trip to downtown San José takes approximately 25 minutes.

Facilities include access ramps, elevators, toilets for the disabled and wheelchairs. Remember to inform your airline about your particular needs at least 48 hours in advance.
