San Jose airport (SJO)

Juan Santamaría International Airport, opened on May 2, 1958, is the main air terminal in Costa Rica. It operates with domestic and international flights throughout America and Europe.

Annual passenger traffic: Around 4.6 million passengers went through it in 2016.

The airport is located 23 km (14 miles) to the northwest of the city of San José.

Bus - At the terminal you can board public bus services with a frequency of 5 minutes. Operators are TUASA (Tel +506 2442 6900), running from 4:30 am to 11:00 pm, and Station Wagon (Tel +506 2441 1181), available 24 hours a day. They travel to Alajuela (15 min.), Heredia (40 min.) and San José (35 min.), with a cost of USD0.95-1.00. In addition, most buses traveling from the beaches at Guanacaste and Puntarenas stop at the airport. On the other hand, Gray Line Airport Express (Tel +506 2220 2126 / 2291 2222) and Interbus (Tel +506 4100 0888) provide private or shared transportation to any destination inside the country and have offices in the baggage reclaim hall.

Taxi - Taxi Unidos (Tel +506 2443 7544), Coopetranstura (Tel +506 8475 3639) and Taxi Aeropuerto (Tel +506 8888 0745) are the airport's official operators. Cabs are orange-coloured and are available around the clock. The service can be hired inside the terminal, after customs. The trip to downtown San José takes approximately 25 minutes.

 

After the customs area, there are car rental desks from Alamo/National/Enterprise (Tel +506 2242 7700 - 24 hours a day), Budget/Apex (Tel +506 2436 2000 - 5:00 am to 0:00 am), Dollar (Tel +506 2443 2078 - 5:00 am to 0:00 am), Economy/Advantage (Tel +506 2299 2000), Hertz/Firefly (Tel +506 2221 1818 / 2258 4343 / 2430 7707 - 5:00 am to 11:00 pm), Payless (Tel +506 2430 4647 / 2256 0101 - 6:00 am to 10:00 pm) and Solid Car Rental/Nu Rent a Car (Tel +506 2442 6000 / 9000 - 5:00 am to 2:00 am).

 

The airport has a bank, ATMs, currency exchange bureaus, VIP rooms, mobile phone services, public telephones and Wi-Fi access free of charge.

Food and Drinks- There are restaurants, fast food outlets, cafés and bars close to the gates and in the food court. Brioche Dorée, Café Lavazza and Bar Imperial are open 24 hours a day.
Shopping- Duty-free shops in baggage reclaim halls 2 and 5 and next to gates 4, 5, 9 and 15. There is also a minimarket and stores selling fashion, souvenirs, books, magazines, handicrafts.
Baggage- 24-hour porter services (Tel +506 8330 4903). Secure wrapping in the check-in area. Enquiries about lost property should be directed to the offices of the appropriate airline.
Other Services- Medical emergencies center, pharmacies, spas.

 

The parking lot, situated next to the terminal building, has two levels, the first one covered and the second uncovered. It operates 24 hours a day and has security cameras. Fees
